For the Makin operation MG Ralph Smith chose the 165th Infantry Regiment as the base unit to which he added the 3rd Battalion, 105th Infantry, 105th Artillery Battalion, and the non-divisional 193rd Tank Battalion. 1 The Marine Division would invade the larger objective, Tarawa, while the Army division would assault Makin. The 2nd Marine Division and the 27th Infantry Division were assigned during the planning and training phases of this operation. Operation GALVANIC, which had been in planning for almost a year, would introduce ground combat forces into the Central Pacific for the first time in the War. As was the case with all of the other Guard divisions, the preponderance of soldiers were either volunteers or recent draftees. The 27th Infantry Division in the Fall of 1943 could hardly be called a National Guard division.
